Born in Los Angeles, USA in 1904, his father was Japanese poet Yonejiro Noguchi and his mother was American writer Leonie Gilmour. He was a medical preparatory student at Columbia University. As a result, he took a sculpture course at the Leonardo da Vinci Art School. He was encouraged by the famous poet and sculptor Onorio Ruotolo and determined to become a sculptor.
In 1927, he received the Guggenheim Fellowship and became the studio assistant of French sculptor Constantin Brancusi. He also went to Beijing to study traditional Chinese painting with Master Qi Baishi. When he went to New York for his first solo exhibition, he met American dancer Martha Graham. The two later became partners and served as stage designers for many of Graham's dance works.
Since the mid-1930s, his collaborations with famous dancers have made him a top artist in dance stage design. His personal design works, whether artistic or practical, are highly praised, making him a master figure, and his works also occupy a place in many big cities in the world.
He also reflected his wonderful work and life experience in his design works. Those organic forms of sculpture-style furniture, lighting, and indoor and outdoor space design had a huge impact on the design circle of the entire 1950s.
Died in New York, USA on December 30, 1988.
