Born in Hattingen, Germany in 1966. Lived and worked as a freelance artist in Freiburg, Germany from 1992 to 2008. Between 2001 and 2003, he formed the GOLDJUNGS art group (Golden Boys) with the German painters Ben Hübsch (1963) and Martin Kasper (1962).
In 2008, during an artist residency, he decided to shift the focus of his life to China. The following year, he rose to prominence and attracted international attention as the curator of the Beijing 798 Biennale, the first biennale in Beijing's Dashanzi Art District.
In 2009, he taught painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts as a guest lecturer, and in 2012 taught at the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts. In 2010, 2011 and 2015 he represented the University of the Arts Berlin and taught at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou as part of the Sino-German Art Institute and prepared exchange years for young Chinese artists in Berlin. Martin Weimer had a profound influence on many young Chinese artists, fundamentally shaping their future artistic careers. His students include Guangdong painter Liang Manqi (b. 1986) and Zhejiang painter Jiang Cheng (b. 1985), both of whom are currently represented by international galleries.
