Born in Anhui, China in 1974, he currently works and lives in Songzhuang, Beijing. He is an independent artist and curator who has long been committed to transforming dream experience and spiritual consciousness into an artistic language with strong visual tension. He is one of the important artists in contemporary China known for his "dream surrealism" style. Liu Guoyi's creation mainly revolves around the visual construction of "dream" and "fantasy". His works depict a spiritual world that wanders between reality and fantasy through various media such as painting, sculpture and printmaking. The characters in the picture often have the characteristics of elves, masks, beasts or half-human and half-gods, and are placed in a floating, deformed or symbolic space, forming an image narrative between fairy tales, fantasy and psychological reality. His painting style combines the symbolic techniques of surrealism with the oriental tradition's emphasis on "image" and "aura", giving his works a unique mysterious temperament and spiritual tension. In terms of artistic language, Liu Guoyi constructs complex but harmonious pictures with delicate and sincere brushstrokes and rich colors. He is good at hiding symbols in details, using the ambiguous relationship between images and the sense of drift in space to guide the viewer into a "subconscious landscape" that transcends the logic of reality. His works not only reflect the deep structure of individual psychology and dream experience, but also reflect the universal spiritual anxiety and desire for transcendence of human beings in contemporary society. Since the 2010s, Liu Guoyi's works have gradually gained widespread international attention. He has held many important solo exhibitions in Beijing Today Art Museum, 798 Zero Space, 798 Yang International Gallery, Dahewan Art Museum, Shenzhen Jupiter Art Museum, Pu Shi Art Museum and other places. At the same time, his works have been selected for international exhibitions and art fairs in France, Canada, the United States, Japan, South Korea and other places, and have been collected by many public art institutions, foundations and private collectors, demonstrating his influence in the context of international contemporary art.
