Born in 1985 in the North West of England, now living in Manchester, UK, he completed his MA in Painting at Manchester School of Art in 2021 and his BA in Fine Arts at the University College of Wales, Cardiff in 2007.
Robin Megannity’s classically layered oil paintings emerge from shadowy dialogues between the tactile and the virtual. Scenes exist outside of time in a hallucinatory reality where the boundaries between physical and imagined spaces dissolve. Populated by provisional sculptures, found objects, actors, and props, these timeless scenes merge the prosaic with the hypothetical. Drawing on historical techniques and traditions, Megannity appropriates and recontextualizes the pathos, melancholy, and solemnity of Northern European still life painting, interrupting these references with elements of digital image-making. Glitches and ruptures in his compositions destabilize historical sources with traces of contemporary methods of media manipulation, while the lifeless simulations of computer renderings or product advertising are imbued with the gravitas of painting, pulling them out of the virtual and granting them authenticity. This interplay of historical and digital imagery creates internal dissonance, pushing his work beyond seductive rendering toward a potent assertion of ambivalence and detachment, where the rationality of technological progress fractures into dystopian hallucinations and dark, delirious fragments.
