江苏扬州人。1928年考入中央大学教育学院艺术科。1929年入西画班学习，主要老师有徐悲鸿、潘玉良、蔡任达等先生。1931年毕业于南京中央大学美术系，留校任助教。1943年为重庆中国美术学院副研究员。1946年赴英国伦敦大学科塔艺术研究院研修。曾任教于南京中央大学美术系、重庆中国美术学院、北京师范大学、北京艺术师范学院美术系、中央美术学院国画系和美术史系，并担任博士生导师。1982年应纽约大学市立学院之聘，成为改革开放后第一位赴美讲授艺术的教授，并应邀在哥伦比亚大学、伯克莱大学、斯坦福大学、南加州大学、帕森斯美术设计学院等校举办讲座。一代宗师齐白石、柳亚子、徐悲鸿、潘玉良等人对张安治的艺术成就曾经给予了充分的肯定。著名的美术史论家、现中央美术学院教授薛永年论及恩师张安治先生时说：“三绝诗、书、画，二美史与论”；“张先生既是一位画家中的学者，又是一位学者型的画家。他的绘画在二十世纪美术史上具有无可取代的独特价值”。
Born in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province. In 1928, he was admitted to the Art Department of the Education College of Central University. In 1929, he entered the Western Painting Class. His main teachers included Xu Beihong, Pan Yuliang, Cai Renda, etc. In 1931, he graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Nanjing Central University and stayed on as an assistant teacher. In 1943, he became an associate researcher at the Chongqing China Academy of Fine Arts. In 1946, he went to the Kota Art Institute of the University of London for further studies. He taught at the Fine Arts Department of Nanjing Central University, Chongqing China Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing Normal University, the Fine Arts Department of Beijing Art Normal College, the Chinese Painting Department and the Art History Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and served as a doctoral supervisor. In 1982, he was invited by the City College of New York University to become the first professor to teach art in the United States after the reform and opening up, and was invited to give lectures at Columbia University, Berkeley University, Stanford University, University of Southern California, Parsons School of Art and Design, etc. The great masters of the generation Qi Baishi, Liu Yazi, Xu Beihong, Pan Yuliang, etc., once gave full recognition to Zhang Anzhi's artistic achievements. Xue Yongnian, a famous art historian and current professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, said of his mentor Mr. Zhang Anzhi: "三绝诗、书、画，二美史与论"; "Mr. Zhang is both a scholar among painters and a scholar-painter. His paintings have irreplaceable and unique value in the history of 20th century art."
