Born in Yixing, Jiangsu, he graduated from Hangzhou Art College and studied under Lin Fengmian and Pan Tianshou. He is a Chinese painter and art educator, and the first Chinese artist to be elected as a corresponding member of the French Academy of Arts. He started with oil painting, then turned to ink painting, and created his own "彩墨画" works, which have both the charm and etherealness of traditional Chinese ink painting and the color and composition of Western modern painting. He loved landscape painting all his life, and was called "留法三剑客" together with Chu Teh-Chun and Zao Wou-Ki.

Wu Guanzhong was a student of Lin Fengmian, and his artistic exploration began when he studied in France. He freely depicted the scenery of the suburbs of Paris with smooth lines, and this charm makes the current audience feel elegant and modern. After returning to China, he began to paint landscapes and figures, and quickly moved towards creating art with expressive techniques when the environment allowed. After that, he freely switched between expressive style and abstract style, and painted works that emphasized subjective feelings more. But overall, there is always a main line guiding the direction of his art, that is, his concept of "the kite is not broken".
