广东省新会市人,是我国早期著名水彩画家之一。
1922年考入上海美术专门学校西洋画科,至1925年毕业。1923年与陈秋草、方雪鸪在上海创办“白鹅画会”,出版《白鹅画刊》。附设有“白鹅绘画研究所”,1934年改名为“白鹅绘画初习学校”。他曾任上海”白鹅画会”研究所指导,前后培养学生千余人,甚有影响;并常为出版公司作书籍装帧设计,替厂商画广告和月份牌。1929至1931年任上海美术专科学校西洋画系素描、水彩画教授。1933年起任上海商务印书馆美术编辑,兼任大成出版公司美术部编辑。1955年起长期执教于中央美术学院华东分院(后为浙江美术学院)。同时潜心于水彩画创作,擅长描绘风景。还曾任上海新中国美术研究所指导,北京商务印书馆美术组封面设计,北京高等教育出版社编辑。
Born in Xinhui City, Guangdong Province, he is one of the famous watercolor painters in my country in the early days.
In 1922, he was admitted to the Western Painting Department of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts and graduated in 1925. In 1923, he founded the "白鹅画会" in Shanghai with Chen Qiucao and Fang Xueluo and published the "白鹅画刊". There is a "白鹅绘画研究所" attached to it, which was renamed "白鹅绘画初习学校" in 1934. He served as the director of the Shanghai "白鹅画会" Research Institute, trained more than a thousand students, and was very influential; he often designed book bindings for publishing companies, and painted advertisements and calendars for companies. From 1929 to 1931, he was a professor of sketching and watercolor painting in the Western Painting Department of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts. From 1933, he served as the art editor of Shanghai Commercial Press and concurrently as the editor of the Art Department of Dacheng Publishing Company. From 1955, he taught at the East China Branch of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (later Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts) for a long time. At the same time, he devoted himself to watercolor creation and was good at depicting landscapes. He also served as an instructor at the Shanghai New China Art Research Institute, a cover designer for the Art Group of the Beijing Commercial Press, and an editor at the Beijing Higher Education Press.
