女，福建闽侯人。中国二十世纪初为数不多的女性画家之一。出生于名门望族，曾经留学法国，在巴黎期间其作品《吹笛女》作为第一位中国女性画家的作品入选“巴黎美术展览会”。1984年巴黎博物馆为她举办了“方君璧从艺六十年回顾展”，给予这位在巴黎起步的东方女画家的业绩以充分的肯定。被誉为“东方杰出的女画家”。代表作品《吹笛女》、《拈花凝思》等。
在中西融合改良中国画的道路上，方君璧做出的贡献其实并不亚于同时代的男性艺术家。她提倡以素描的写实精神来改革传统中国绘画艺术理念和目标，虽未像林风眠、徐悲鸿等人有明确出版自己的艺术理念，然而在这场改良中国画的运动中，贡献依旧显着。其油画极赋东方色彩，她倾心将中国画所具有的意境和气韵融入其中，不仅设色强烈，而且用笔雄健，一扫闺秀作风，而国画在传统写意之余，亦不失油画笔法。其静物作品在引入阴阳透视的观看方式外，还以纯真质朴的表现手法展现出物象的生机和活力，花卉之作则敷色清雅，以勾线平涂突显韵味，人物肖像更是观察入微，以其女性独特的视角和细腻的情感，在将严谨的轮廓与传统绘画的写意结合之中捕捉人物的神韵与精妙。在某种程度上，作为“五四”新女性代表人物的方君璧，以她单纯的艺术才华与独特的审美品格，不仅成为中国现代美术的拓荒者，也成为推动中国画向现代转型进程中不可或缺的有力先锋。
