1991年生于浙江，于中国美术学院获得学士和硕士学位，现任教于绍兴文理学院，工作生活于浙江，她以天然漆为主要创作媒介，作品涵盖漆画、漆立体及装置。潘草原的创作根植于中国悠久的漆工艺传统，并将这一古老的媒介视为连接往昔世界的桥梁。她着迷于天然漆不完全可控并始终处于“生成中”状态的特性，将创作过程视为与自然持续的互动，并将身体性和时间性的特质融入作品，试图重构仪式性和复魅的感知体验，以回应前现代世界的宇宙观和精神世界。与此同时，她长期从被排除在经典艺术史序列以外的文化现象汲取养分，尝试从手工艺、装饰、恋物等角度展开对主流文化秩序和价值体系的反思。
潘草原曾获赏清华大学乔十光漆画艺术创新奖金奖，作品被中国美术馆，福建省美术馆，湖北美术馆，德国明斯特漆博物馆及中国港口博物馆收藏，近年作品展出于湖北美术馆（武汉 2024），美凯龙艺术中心（北京，2024），浙江美术馆（杭州，2024），中国美术学院美术馆（杭州，2024），今日美术馆（北京，2023），浙江展览馆（杭州，2022），中国美术馆（北京，2021），山东美术馆（济南，2021），中国港口博物馆（宁波，2021）等。
Born in Zhejiang in 1991, Pan Caoyuan received her bachelor's and master's degrees from the China Academy of Art. She currently teaches at Shaoxing University of Arts and Sciences and works and lives in Zhejiang. She uses natural lacquer as her main creative medium, and her works include lacquer paintings, lacquer three-dimensional and installations. Pan Caoyuan's creations are rooted in China's long-standing lacquer craft tradition, and she regards this ancient medium as a bridge connecting the past world. She is fascinated by the characteristics of natural lacquer that is not fully controllable and is always in a "generating" state. She regards the creative process as a continuous interaction with nature, and incorporates the characteristics of physicality and temporality into her works, trying to reconstruct the perceptual experience of ritual and re-enchantment in response to the cosmology and spiritual world of the pre-modern world. At the same time, she has long drawn nourishment from cultural phenomena that have been excluded from the sequence of classical art history, and has tried to reflect on the mainstream cultural order and value system from the perspectives of handicrafts, decoration, fetishism, etc.
Pan Caoyuan has won the gold medal of Tsinghua University Qiao Shiguang Lacquer Painting Art Innovation Award. His works are collected by the National Art Museum of China, Fujian Art Museum, Hubei Art Museum, Münster Lacquer Museum in Germany and China Port Museum. In recent years, his works have been exhibited in Hubei Art Museum (Wuhan 2024), IKEA Art Center (Beijing, 2024), Zhejiang Art Museum (Hangzhou, 2024), China Academy of Art Art Museum (Hangzhou, 2024), Today Art Museum (Beijing, 2023), Zhejiang Exhibition Hall (Hangzhou, 2022), National Art Museum of China (Beijing, 2021), Shandong Art Museum (Jinan, 2021), China Port Museum (Ningbo, 2021), etc.
