Born in 1981 in Shaanxi, China, Zhang graduated from Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts in 2005. He now lives and works in Beijing. Zhang's paintings combine both realist and surrealist qualities:  in terms of painting technique, his works are rich in the subtlety and elegance of classical paintings, with neat and concise compositions; but their contents are often saturated with whimsical and ingenious ideas, lending a dreamlike touch to familiar and ordinary spaces while establishing imaginative spacetime relationships on the canvas.

Beneath the artist's reserved and contemplative application of colours, these “impossible” scenes often contain an underlying sentiment of sorrow and isolation; for Zhang Yingnan, the sense of melancholy that pervades his works originates from his perception of interpersonal relationships. His childhood experience of growing up in a village compound contrasts drastically with the experience of studying and working in the metropolis as an adult: the affinity of living within a rural community became the indifference and detachment of the urban relationships. The vacant and desolate environments in the paintings signify the lost pass, the hollowness of contemporary mental and psychological states, and the place of imagination where the artist settles his thoughts, feelings, and memories.
