Born in Bardowick, Germany in 1945, he immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1950 and obtained a master's degree in fine arts from the University of Colorado in 1969. In 1972, he held his first solo exhibition at the Paley & Lowe Gallery in New York. In 1975, he participated in the group exhibition "Fundamental Painting" at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and in 1977, he participated in the 6th Kassel Documenta, and gradually became famous in the 1970s. From 1992 to 2011, Jerry Zyniuk taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, and since 2014 he has taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kolbermühle. In 2020, he joined the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts. He currently works and lives in Munich. His works are widely collected by many art and public institutions, museums and galleries, such as the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, the Contemporary Art Collection of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Josef Albers Museum, the Winterthur Art Museum, the Folkwang Museum, the Ludwig Museum, etc.
He has always avoided narrative imagery in his works, and he seeks to completely free his works from explanation, narration and everything related to psychology. His paintings present the following characteristics: strong color attributes, dynamic composition, and a perceptual space that is completely open to the audience. This style has lasted for more than 40 years in Zhai Niuk's artistic career. Color, color block shape, and the presentation of the painting increasingly occupy the main theme of his works.
