Born in Kiel in 1935, he is a German contemporary abstract painter, philosopher and art historian. Since 1969, he has been working on the concept of "color painting". From 1971 to 1985, he worked as a freelance professor of painting and art theory at the National Academy of Fine Arts (Städelschule) in Frankfurt am Main and served as dean. For him, color is not just color, shape is not just any shape, but life is always put first. He tries to trace this inherent life through his art. Today, 88-year-old Joachims works and lives in Maintal near Frankfurt am Main.

He has always been committed to painting contemplation, as well as process-based abstraction. His work developed after his involvement in the monochrome and optical painting movements in the 60s and 70s. From 1973, his unique shape painting stems from the study of special shapes in materials, such as Buddha statues, Polynesian ancestral statues, Aztec pottery, Egyptian sculptures and classical Chinese paintings. He cleverly uses traces of materials to create new autonomous works without any obvious reference sources. His approach ignores historical and geographical differences, assimilating the resulting shapes into abstract statements of innovation.
