Born in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, in 1996, currently lives and works in São Paulo, SP. Represented by Portas Vilaseca Gallery, he is a participant in the 2024 PIPA Prize.
A graduate of the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro, Arthur Palhano explores the intricate relationship between action and gesture within the realm of painting, revealing through scraping its multiple historical layers. Both gesture and the chosen tools to depict his poetic imagery demand a negotiation between what is presented as the foreground and background of the painting, as their depths are excavated. His production is closely related to the desire for expenditure, revelation, and investigation of these multiple layers—both material and historical—involved in an artistic process that exalts, above all, an economy of matter where everything matters. By valorizing the choice of these aesthetic procedures, pictorial physicality reveals a conceptual structure that blurs the boundaries between the tangible and intangible.
