1956年出生于天津，祖籍山东。1982年毕业于天津美术学院壁画系，随后分配到天津大学建筑分校建筑系任教。1986年调回母校油画系任教授、硕士生导师。曾于1998年赴比利时安特卫普皇家美术学院做访问学者，进行中欧之间的艺术交流。
早在美院学习期间，孔千便开始漆画创作，深受“杨柳青年画”风格影响；1983年转为架上油画创作。他的素描也另辟蹊径，自成一体，1998年出版的《孔千素描》，被众多艺术学子奉为临摹典范之一。孔千的创作游离于挟裹着喧嚣与狂欢的当代艺术的场域之外，他的创作既不属于我们所熟知的当代艺术主流的样式，又与正统的学院派风格保持着距离，他的创作语言回归到个人的生存经验中，回到个人与世界的对话中，也回到绘画语言的锤炼与融合中，从而拥有了一种跨越时间与空间的超然态度和力量。
Born in Tianjin in 1956, his ancestral home is Shandong. He graduated from the Mural Painting Department of Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts in 1982, and was subsequently assigned to teach in the Architecture Department of the Architecture Branch of Tianjin University. In 1986, he was transferred back to his alma mater, the Oil Painting Department, as a professor and master's tutor. In 1998, he went to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium, as a visiting scholar to conduct artistic exchanges between China and Europe.
Kong Qian began to create lacquer paintings as early as when he was studying at the Academy of Fine Arts, and was deeply influenced by the "Yangliu Youth Painting" style; in 1983, he switched to easel oil painting. His sketches are also unique and self-contained. "Kong Qian's Sketch" published in 1998 is regarded as one of the models of copying by many art students. Kong Qian's creations are outside the field of contemporary art that is full of noise and carnival. His creations neither belong to the mainstream styles of contemporary art that we are familiar with, but also maintain a distance from the orthodox academic style. The creative language returns to personal survival experience, to the dialogue between the individual and the world, and to the tempering and integration of painting language, thus possessing a transcendent attitude and power that spans time and space.
